YONKERS, NY – Lansdowne Rugby Football Club announced their first set of fixtures for the Spring season. As of right now, the current fixtures are all friendlies, while details on this year’s Empire GU Spring Challenge Cup competition remain TBA. Lansdowne have filled up their spring with some familiar opponents in the region, but are fortunate to also add a historic club traveling from across the pond. Unlike the previous year, Empire GU are not doing a league style challenge cup over the span of 6 weeks, but instead are opting for a weekend long tournament, that will take place at a host to be selected by the Union.
Lansdowne start their Spring season with a match against North Jersey, to be played at home at Tibbetts Brook Park on April 4th. The weather should be comfortable for all kinds of supporters to come out and support the boys from Woodlawn. Following that, on April 25th, Lansdowne will face Queens RFC for their first ever encounter of any kind. Queens Rugby are a brand new rugby club founded by Rugby United New York Co-Owner, and former Lansdowne player, James Kennedy, and debuted in Empire GU Division 4 just this previous Fall season. That match will take place at Randall’s Island Park, located underneath the Triboro / RFK Bridge. In May, Lansdowne return home and host longtime local opponent Long Island RFC, followed by a match against the historic St. Mary’s College RFC. St. Mary’s come all the way from Dublin, Ireland, boasting 120 years of history, and a recent All-Ireland Rugby championship in 2012. Closing out the season so far, Lansdowne look to defend their Interstate Championship medal against Montclair RFC, a division 2 side, whom Lansdowne defeated last June. The match will held at the Irish Expo, in West Orange, NJ and take place on June 14th.
