Homeside Lansdowne put on a scintillating performance with a dominant victory in Tibbetts Brook Park last week. New York were handicapped as they had only 15 players at kickoff and then lost one due qto injury. Lansdowne struck early. In minute 5 a muscular scrum by the pack got the Irishmen in close. Sean Hayes pulled away and touched down in the corner, and Barry Enright’s touchline conversion split the posts. The Lansdowne scrum, led by Tom Murray, Facundo Soraire, Sean Collum and Man of the Match Niall Dillon, began to assert themselves and created an effective platform for the backs to attack. After sustained pressure Omari Ross touched down in minute 10 and Barry Enright converted to double the lead. The Connacht 2nd row duo of Dave Hansbury and Steve Grenham continued their brilliant form as Lansdowne’s scrummaging shone brightly. In minute 15 Dillon Casey passed out wide to Barry Enright who touched down and then proceeded to convert his own try. The Irish onslaught continued. Minute 29 saw the homeside pack continue their dominance. Dominic Sofe led the charge into goal via a rolling maul and touched down thereby securing the bonus point. In minute 35, an errant Lansdowne pass deep in their own half saw a perceptive New York center gobble up possession and glide into goal to get them on the score sheet. But just 3 minutes later, a sublime 40 meter dash and offload by Dillon Casey got the ball out wide to Robby Davies, who touched down. Barry Enright’s conversion put the numbers at 33-7. And at the close of the half,  Barry Enright’s clever grubber kick downfield found its way to Hugh Byrne who promptly slammed down at the whistle.
The 2nd half began with a bang for the homeside. A 42 minute intercept by Robby Davies led to his passing out wide to Barry Enright. He blew past 2 defenders and slammed down in goal to put the numbers at 43-7. Minute 51 saw a New York try as their center demonstrated some lovely footwork while gliding into goal. But in minute 55 the Lansdowne pack’s dominance continued. A New York infringement caused the Irishmen to kick into touch for a 5 meter lineout. Dave Hansbury pushed over and Dillon Casey converted for a 41 point Lansdowne lead. And, off the kickoff in minute 58, Lansdowne drove deep, and Mike Russell capped it off by slamming down followed by a Barry Enright conversion. Despite having a huge deficit to overcome, New York were valiant. Total commitment by their remaining 14 players saw them create a beautiful team try and conversion to get their numbers into the twenties. But in minute 73, Lansdowne closed the scoring with the always impressive Steven Grenham continuing his try scoring haul with yet another. John Giordano’s conversion ended the numbers.
